I welcome you as a new student, (Ambassador) to Jephthah. Our vision is to be best Secondary School in Nigeria for academic and educational support services. Jephthah is dedicated to the mission of providing all admitted students with a foundation for lifetime achievement in academic, social and spiritual pursuits. I am delighted to welcome you as a member of the JCSS academic community. At JCSS our mission is to provide you with the assistance and guidance you need to help you obtain a successful junior and senior secondary education.

This handbook has been designed to assist you in making the 2004-2005 School year an outstanding one. As we begin a new and exciting year we look forward to working with parents, staff, students, and members of our community to ensure a productive and successful year. Our school welcomes you to its ranks. We hope that you will always be conscious of its traditions and requirement. This school will be whatever you make it. REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Students are encouraged to read the national policy on the 6-3-3-4 educational system in Nigeria . The following regulations will be in effect for the current school year.

1•  All JS 1 admissions are valid for 3 year i.e. to JS 3. A fresh application will be required for continuation to the Senior Secondary School tier

2•  All JS3 students must attain a minimum overall percentage of 60% for admission into the Senior Secondary School .

3•  All students must attend classes every day as specified in the school time-table. No student will be allowed to have classes during breakfast, assembly, break or lunch periods without special permission.

4•  All SS 1 students are to offer all the subjects for the class during the 1 st and 2 nd Terms. The lead Counselor will organize a choice of subjects/ career guidance programme at the beginning of the third term.

5•  All SS2 and SS3 students are to choose subject very carefully because these choices will be reflected on the computerized schedule cards sent to WAEC and NECO

PROCEDURE FOR STUDENTS
ON ARRIVEAL
, OBTAIN A CLEARANCE FORM FROM THE Bursary Dept, then sign in with the Boarding House department (both activities takes place in the Chapel). Proceed to the school store with your clearance and pick up your supplies. Label them properly. Locate your hostel and move in with you luggage. Don't afraid to ask for assistance. Locate the Dinning Hall and your classroom. Read the daily schedule on the Notice Board in your hostel to know where to be and at what time. Make sure you are ready for the first day of class, go to class and study hard.

COUNSELING AND GUID ANCE SERVICES
As an aid in helping all students solve their problems, he counselor will be in the office for counseling each day. The counselor is available to help you with registration, interpret test results, career planning, choice of subjects in senior school and help you solve personal problems that may prevent your from doing your best possible work school.

In compliance with the 6-3-3-4 educational system in Nigeria , JCSS offers the following 14 subjects at the Junior school level.

Music, Fine Art and English Literature combine to form creative Arts, computer Studies is not examined at the final examinations by both Rivers State Government and Federal Government yet.

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAMME JUNIORS SCHOOL

At he end of the first Continuous Assessment Test and Termly examinations, awards are given to the first, second and third position in each class, i.e 1,2and 3. This award ceremony is witnessed by both staff and students. During the annual graduation, award and prize giving day the overall subject best in JS3. the Best Behaved Junior male and female students Awards are also presented on graduation day to the deserving students.

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM SENIOR SCHOOLS

At the end of the first Continuous Assessment Test and the Termly Examination, awards are given to the first, second and third position in each class SS1 – SS3. this award ceremony is witnessed by both staff and students. During the annual graduation, award and prize giving day the overall best student in academics, best in Science, best in Arts and humanities, are presented with plaques while prized are awarded to overall subject best in SS3

A very important award is the “student of the year Award” in SS3 Class. “It is more than just books” Requirements to become a student of the year includes:

•  Character: The student must portray a level of integrity that can serve as a role model for other students.

•  Leadership: The student must be an ability to be a capable leader

•  Service: The student must be active in both community (hostels) and school.

•  Academics: As always the student is expected to demonstrate academic excellence by maintaining a percentage of at least    70.

VITAL INFORMATION FOR JCSS STUDENTS

GENERAL INFORMATION

•  Visiting Day
The visiting day for the school is 2 nd Sunday in the Month between 12:00noon and 6:00pm

•  Pocket Money
Students should be given enough money to cover their essential needs, repairs of shoes, Chapel offering, hair cut, etc) A sum of N500 to N800 per term should do

 

•  Communication
Parents are encouraged to write letters to their children through the school letter Box P.O.Box 12540, Port Harcourt or through electronic mail: jephthah@schoolmail.net

•  Hair Cut
It is necessary for the students to have neatly cut hair during the term always. Female students have the option of plaiting, weaving or cutting their hair low. (No attachment please)

•  P.T.A.
The school has Parents Teachers Association. Membership to the P.T.A is mandatory to all parents and Teachers.

•  Parents Intercessory Prayer Meeting
The Parent's Intercessory Prayer Meeting comes up every 3 rd Saturday at 10:00am in the School Chapel. It is optional but parents are advised to join hands and pray for their children and the school.

•  Electronic Toys and Equipment
Walkman, Game boy, Computer Game, Radio cassette, disc etc are forbidden in the school. Simple scientific calculators (non-programmable) are allowed. Photocamers, GSM phone, fixed wireless phones etc are not allowed.

•  Appeal
Please we beg you to Read and take any material sent to you from the school seriously and ask questions in case you need clarification.

STUDENTS CONDUCT CODE
Students will be held responsible for their actions and shall conduct themselves in keeping with their level of maturity, showing regard for established authority and right and welfare of others. All students should comply with the student conduct code.

  1. Students must not sleep after rising bell
  2. Students must not fail to do their morning duty
  3. Students must not be late to all school activities

Students must not display defiance or insubordination

His/her sister's/brother's book then refunds will be made after proof that the inherited once are in good and readable order. It is noteworthy that publisher do up date their books sometimes yearly leading to “New Edition” Teachers also request for change of books when an Author presents a new book better than the one recommended previously.

5. Resumption Dates:

Failure to resume on the published resumption dates attract a fine of N2, 000.00 (Two thousand Naria). Permission for late resumption (with cogent reasons) can be obtained from the school when applicable.

6. Faith:

The school is of the non-denominational Christian faith students and parents are required to support the teachings of the School and cheerfully, support the rules and authority in the Spirit of Christ (Heb. 13:17)

7. Medical

The School operates a male and female clinic manned by qualified Nurses. Medical fees paid by students does not cover expenses like surgery, dental, opthamological and other major medical conditions.

8. Permission to stay out of school

Students are not permitted to stay out of school for reasons such as Wedding, housewarming parties, birthday parties, grand parent's burial etc. The school provides a termly Calendar at the beginning of each year to enable parents know the “days of School” in the session.

9. Withdrawal and Re-absorption

    1. Parents are allowed to withdraw their children form the School. Reasons for withdrawal may include, transfer (e.g cross posting), inability to continue with fees, and dissatisfaction with the school system, students inability to cope etc. However any withdrawal may reabsorb based on the following conditions.

 

a.   Satisfactory resolve of what led to the withdrawal

ii. Availability of vacancy both in the class and dormitory

iii. Scoring above 70% in a test to be given to the student in line with his/her new class

iv. Approval by the Management Board.

b. The school will revoke the admission of a student if:

i.  The Students fails to resume on the first day of the session without prior notice to the school. Usually, a letter will be written to the parents nothing the absence of the of the student and requesting an explanation for the non-resumption. The admission is then revoked after seven days if our letter is not replied

ii. The student is involved in armed robbery or other acts demanding seclusion in a government organized institution. Other school policies will be conveyed to you later.

Health Services

The male clinic is located in peace House in the male Hostel while the female clinic is located in the ground floor of the female Hostel. Students are to teport to the clinic for weight and height measurement at the beginning and end of each term. The Health Officers have a liaison office next to the Senior Boarding House Master's Office. All medical problems should be directed to the Male & Female Health Officers.

Students becoming ill during the school day should report to the clinic If it is necessary for the student to go to his/her family clinic, the health officer will inform the Estate manager to provide transport.

Under no circumstance shall a student go home without permission Referral to a doctor or other health agency will be made when treatment is beyond the means of the school. Students should bring all Medication to the clinic for safe keeping.

LIBRARY SERVICES

The JCSS Library offers you a well equipped and well equipped and well ventilated area for reading and research. The library is located on the second floor of the main school Block. Students are expected to spend their library period in the Library. No textbooks are allowed in the library. Books, encyclopedias, magazine, newspapers and information articles cannot be checked out of the library. If you have any questions, please see a member of the library staff. The library is open between 7:30am and 4:00pm daily except on Saturday and Sundays.

RESOURCE CENTRE

The Resource centre which houses material resources used in teaching and learning which are usually not consumable but hardware and software provides a very conducive atmosphere for IT (information Technology based learning) viz-acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of all types of information using computers, audio visuals and other teaching aids.

The center is located on the second floor of the main school block adjacent to the library. I houses about 30 computers for now.

The centre is opened to all students between 8:am and 4.pm daily from Monday to Friday, but usage is strictly based on the laid out time table. Any question could be directed to a staff member of the Resource centre.

IN-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Student Notice Boards are located in front of the the laboratory block (by the physics Laboratory), the stairway landing on the ground floor of the main school block and in the various hostels.

Announcements are made daily during the general assembly or in the dinning hall when necessary. School authorities may regulate the time of, manner and place of announcement on school grounds. All students letters from the post office ( P.O. Box 12540 , Port Harcourt ) and the electronic mail ( jephthah@schoolmail.com ) are sent to the Senior Boarding House Master's (SBHM) office for distribution. Students wishing to post letters can do so through the SBHM Office.

DRESS CODE

Appearance is an area of importance in any school. Accepted standards of good taste have been developed by former Jephthah students. Students are urged to exercise good taste in appearance. The principal as the education leader, is generally responsible for the attitude, manner and conduct of the pupils and staff. Therefore the principal has specific authority to admit and dismiss students who are not properly dressed. Fashions that the principal deems distractive from the educational process will not be allowed. In addition to the specific policies and procedures of the school board, students at Jephthah are expected to comply with the following regulations.

1. Hair

Hair should be kept neat, lean and reasonably styled for boys and girl. It is necessary for male students to have neatly cut hair during the term and always. Female students have the option of weaving plaiting or cutting their hair low (no attachment please).

2. Dress

Navy blue waist coat, white shirt with blue tie and navy blue trousers are used by the boys is royal blue trousers, and blue stripe or check shirt. The Sunday wear consist of a black wait coat and trousers with a white shirts and red tie. The girl's school uniform is similar to that of the boys.

All students are expected to adhere to common practices of cleanliness and neatness. The student who fails to comply with this code will be sent home. Any clothing, accessories, symbols jewelry or other paraphernalia which depicts or suggests association with a gang/cult shall not be brought to school worn at school or in any way be presented at any school related event. Teachers are charged with the responsibility of enforcing student dress policy in their classes as well as on campus. Assistant Hall Masters and other school personnel share the same responsibility.

3. Accessories

•  All students must wear shoes

•  Any type of head covering, other than the hat for church services is inappropriate

•  Body piercing is not accepted except for the ears

•  Chain or spike jewels is considered unacceptable

SCHOOL DINNING SERVICES

Beverage and Biscuits are served at teatime daily (7:30am -7:45am) We also serve Breakfast daily at 10:00am. Lunches are served each day in the Dinning Hall at 2:30pm

All students are eligible for snacks and fruit drink at snack time daily (5:15pm). Supper is server at 9:30pm. Students are encouraged to exhibit good behaviors in Jephthah Dinning Hall. Trading of food is not allowed. Food is not allowed in the hostels, classrooms, laboratories, workshops.

Lost and Found

All found articles are to be taken to the office of the Senior Boarding House Master where they can be claimed by their owners.

Assurance of Discrimination

No student shall be denied the right to participate in any school program because of the student's social class, ethnicity, or sex. However, for medical reasons a student may be denied participation in a school event. All complaints of discrimination shall be handled through established channels and procedures beginning with the principal, followed by appeal to the Administrator.
