MINUTES OF JEPHTHAH PTA GENERAL MEETING OF DECEMBER 10, 2006

COMMENCEMENT/OPENING PRAYER:
The meeting started at about 2.45pm with opening prayer said by Engr. Alabi

CHAIRMAN’S OPENING REMARKS: 
The Chairman welcomed members.   He presented the agenda of the meeting to the house for approval and adoption.  Motion for adoption of agenda was moved by Dr. (Mrs.) Frank-Peterside, N. and supported by Mr. Ngene P.

READING AND ADOPTION OF MINUTES OF LAST MEETING:
Minutes of the last meeting were distributed and read. 
Correction: (1) On basic 9, (it ‘will’ not work should be it ‘may’ not work
(2) name No 49 on attendance list ‘Favstina’ should read Faustina The name of the Principal (Dr. Agbapulonwu) was not on the attendance list; ‘Engeer’ (Prof.) H. I. Hart should be Engineer (Prof.) H.I. Hart;  Mr. Patrick should be Mr. Patrick Ngene. 
The corrections were noted and motion for adoption was moved by Mr. P. Ngene and supported by Mrs. Benjamin F.

MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES:
(1)  Engineer Alabi sought to know the situation with reconciliation of account with the school Bursar.   Dr (Mrs.) Ngene said two parents paid school fees into the PTA account and this had been resolved.  Project levy and 1st term dues for 2006/2007 have not been paid into the PTA account.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
No negative incident so far recorded, continuous assessment tests and first term exam were successfully conducted.  An outstanding case of bullying is being investigated.  Some teachers resigned at the end of last session and have been replaced.  Workshop was organized for the entire teaching staff.

AOB:
Letter of Appeal from the school for PTA to support the end of session activities was read to the house.  The sum of N100,000 was proposed to support the project, this was supported by Mr. P. Ngene,  Mr. Asekhauno proposed PTA support the project with N150,000. The Chairman put the two suggestions to the house and the house unanimously approved N100,000 to support the project.  

Mr. Ngene reminded the house of the one year anniversary of the Sosoliso plane crash.  A minute silence was observed in honour of those that died in the crash.

Mrs. E. Okenwa appreciated the PTA for their support during the burial of her husband.  The Chairman also mentioned the death and burial of Mrs. Kupa and the presence of PTA.

Dr. (Mrs.) B. Korubo spoke on the incident of water that was poured on an Asst. House Mistress’s bed, she appealed to parents to discipline their children and encouraged them to pay school fees promptly.

Mrs. P. Fumudoh spoke on the need for prompt attendance to sick children and wish parents’ of sick child be informed promptly.  She cited the case of her child and claimed the child was not promptly attended to.

PRINCIPAL’S RESPONSE:
In reaction to the case in question, the Principal said that the school takes health reports seriously. The Principal called on the nurse to tell the house what happened.  According to Mr. Chidiebere Agunwah (male nurse), the child did not report the case to the nurses immediately. It was the second day that the case was reported and was taken up immediately.  Health matters according to the Nurse are promptly reported to the Principal and concerned parents

Pharmacist P. Oru-bo sought to know if menu changes and how frequent.  He also complained about the open day and the last environmental sanitation that coincided.  The Principal said that students make changes to their menus as and when due. Mrs. Lizzy Isofi said that the school does not serve the students with dinner on visiting days. 

 

 

The Vice Principal Senior School debunked the notion, she explained to the house the fact that students do not patronize the dining on visiting days due to over-feeding from food brought for them from home

Mrs. E. Njoku expressed the need for close monitoring of the students especially on Saturdays.

Principal called on Mr. D. Esikot to respond to the case of non-monitoring.  He (Mr. Esikot) analyzed the schedule of how the boarding staff monitor the students on daily basis. Mr. Prince Usip also enumerated how the inspectors monitor the students during lessons and preparatory classes (prep).

The Chairman welcomed the new parents (JS1 parents). He encouraged all parents to be part of the monitoring and discipline of children to compliment the efforts of the school.

Mrs. Ogbonna claimed that teachers are not doing enough to keep watch on the students.  Principal and the Chairman encouraged parents to partner with the school to achieve effective monitoring and discipline.

The Chairman read out the names of clubs in the school and encouraged parents to see the VP Senior School to volunteer as patrons to the clubs.

The Chairman recognized the presence of Prof. H. I. Hart and Lady Ezekiel-Hart the immediate past PTA Chairman and P.R.O respectively. Gifts were handed over to them on behalf of the PTA by Linsey Eze Ngozi, she also prayed and wished them well in their future endeavour.

Prof. Hart in his response thanked the PTA for the gift and the honour accorded him.  He equally narrated his relationship with the school and how God had been faithful to him and his family.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2006-2008
The Acting Chairman (Mr. Enujuba, P.) handed over the affairs of the house to the immediate past Chairman (Prof. H.I. Hart) for him to dissolve the present executive and conduct election for the 2006-2008. 

Mr. Ngene appealed to the house to allow the Acting Chairman who was the Vice Chairman in the immediate past executive council take up the position of the Chairman for the sake of continuity.

His suggestion was put to the house by Prof. Hart, moreover, only three officers have actually completed their tenure as stipulated by the constitution.  The House requested for the list of offices that are vacant and decided to fill same.  They are the office of Vice Chairman, PRO and Financial Secretary. Nomination and election into the offices were carried out and names of the elected Officers to run the Association for the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 academic sessions are stated below:

The newly elected Chairman (Mr. Enujuba) in a lighter mood then announced that ‘today (December 10) is his birthday’ he thanked the house for the great honour to be asked to serve as Chairman of Jephthah P.T.A.  He went down memory lane of how his children came to be students in Jephthah reiterating that the decision for Jephthah was a deliberate one.  He appealed to parents to do their best in working hand–in–hand in order to give our children the best we can.

ADJOURNMENT:
The Chairman asked for adjournment.  Engr. Ngene moved for adjournment while Mrs. Okenwa supported.  Mrs. Enujuba then said the closing prayer at about 4.38pm bringing the meeting to a close.
